About the Foundation

Enriching Lives Through Croquet

The Croquet Foundation of America, Inc. (CFA) was established in 1979 as a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit corporation promoting the amateur sport of croquet in America. Thanks to the late philanthropist Charles P. Steuber who conceived, built and largely financed the National Croquet Center (NCC), croquet has an extraordinary home with twelve, full-sized, championship-level courts for 6-wicket croquet.

In addition, there are two full-sized, 6-wicket practice courts, and one regulation 9-wicket court. The main building or “Clubhouse” houses the headquarters offices of the CFA, the United States Croquet Association, Inc. (USCA), and our outstanding resident caterer, Sandy James Fine Food and Productions, Inc.

The 19,000 square foot, Caribbean Colonial headquarters building on a ten-acre site also houses the Croquet Museum and The U.S. Croquet Hall of Fame. In addition to its offices, the building has two large ballrooms, a dining room, lounge, kitchen, and a large wraparound veranda. See www.croquetnational.com.

As such, the National Croquet Center is the largest and finest croquet facility in the world. It also shares its space with the largest independent croquet club in the nation — The National Croquet Club, with over 400 members.

Croquet is a sport that can be played at a highly competitive level by male or female players over a wide range of ages, making it an ideal family sport. It is especially attractive to seniors as a low-impact sport requiring dexterity, focus, and strategic thinking. That, combined with exercise for fitness, plus a high degree of camaraderie and social interaction, make croquet one of the healthiest of all sports.
